Don’t Waste Energy On Those Occasional Hot Fall Days

Even when the weather gets cooler, there might be some days where you feel like using your air conditioner. Unfortunately, an air conditioning unit uses the most energy out of every unit in your home, and you'll be wasting money if you don't use your air conditioner as efficiently as possible.

Run Ceiling Fans

Use ceiling fans whenever you can. The ceiling fans may allow you to avoid using your air conditioning on some days. Even on days where you do use your air conditioner, the ceiling fans will allow you to place less strain on your air conditioning unit since it won't have to work as hard to keep your home cool. When your ceiling fans are running, you're able to turn your thermostat up somewhat, and your air conditioner does not have to kick in as much.

Don't Adjust the Thermostat Too Much

Do not touch your thermostat too much. You should raise the thermostat, but don't keep raising and lowering the setting. If you feel uncomfortable, you might want to adjust the thermostat, but this is less efficient. It's even worse if you want the air conditioner to operate faster and you lower the thermostat as much as possible. This won't actually make your air conditioner cool faster. It will simply cost you money.

Close Your Curtains

Keep your curtains closed when it's uncomfortably hot. This will prevent sunlight from entering your home, which raises the temperature. As a result, your air conditioner won't have to work as hard to cool your home.

Wear Fewer Layers

Look for ways that you can wear fewer layers of clothing. It's best to have outfits with multiple layers so that you can add a layer when you experience a sudden drop in temperature that is common as it gets colder out. Some days might feel as warm as summertime, but on other days, the temperature might drop unexpectedly.

Choose a Window Air Conditioner

If you are having an new residential air conditioning unit installed, you may want to use a window AC instead of central air. Central air is designed to keep your entire home cool, which might be comfortable but also wastes energy when you're not even in most of the rooms in your home most of the time. You may only want a window AC in your living room where you spend most of your time until it's time for bed.
